Ogun is one of the most powerful Orishas. One of iron, energy, creativity, war, hunting, invention and most of all protection. Ogun's symbolism transfers into our lives when we need help and strength removing negative thoughts and/or happenings that have been placed there through no fault of our own, our own mistakes, by another, or by fear. He facilitates strength, change, opportunity, courage, and the ability to clear away your obstacles.

This fierce warrior is one of the oldest Orishas and is pictured as a blacksmith as he’s a powerful spirit of metal work. Ogun is the edge of the knife, the knife that can kill or save, that is the wild nature of Ogun. Working with Ogun’s protective nature is invaluable for anyone who have spiritual and material enemies. Ogun will seek justice for its children and will protect anyone who seeks him for help.

Ogun is the Orisha of barbers, doctors, butchers, blacksmiths and any occupation that uses knives or blades, or iron tools. Like metal, he is rigid and strong and is usually seen with a machete, bow and arrow or a hammer.

Ogun is the god of Truth and Justice and presides over deals and contracts. In Yoruba courts, devotees of the faith swear to tell the truth by kissing a machete sacred to Ogun.

In Cuba, his Catholic saint is Saint Peter. In Brazil, it is Saint George. His day of celebration is June 29th. His colors are green and black in the transatlantic traditions but is represented by red and white in Yoruba culture.

It is said that in the Old Testament Books of the Bible, specifically Proverbs 3:13-18, this beautiful praise of Oshun is embedded in the Good Book under her Holy name Wisdom, or Sophia, who is the Greek goddess name used in the original Greek New Testament Bible, which is of the same foundation and essence as the Yoruba Ifa.

Proverbs 3:13-18 (KJV) goes as follows:

13. Happy is the man that findeth [wisdom/sophia] Osun, and the man that getteth understanding [of her arts and science].

14. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

15. [She] Oshun is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

16. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

17. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

18. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
